Student Support, Special Educational Needs and English as an Additional Language

At different times in their lives, children may need additional support in their school life for a number of reasons. This can range from transitioning to a new school, moving to a new country, having a serious illness or family problems at home. Mostly such issues are dealt with by your child’s class teacher as teachers see themselves as ‘mothers’ of the children and understand the importance of emotional support to every child’s education. However sometimes a child may need some time out of class or other forms of support. At Shakhsiyah Schools we have a dedicated Student Support teacher who also acts as our cover teacher in the event of Teacher absence. This means that this specific teacher will personally know every child in the school and be able to support them if required.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Shakhsiyah schools believe in personalised learning and children with specific educational needs will be supported in a range of ways. We recognise the right of each individual child, including those with special needs, to an appropriate quality learning experience in line with the school’s ethos. Parents/Carers will be involved at every stage and in any plans that are made to meet a child's individual special needs.

  • Initially teachers will attempt a range of strategies in class and see if your child has a particular learning style we can tap into.
  • Following this if a teacher still has concerns, the Student Support teacher will carry out a home visit (for children in the Early Years) to gain vital information from you and the home environment. The Student Support teacher will carry also out observations and spend some time working with your child to try and identify if your child has any special needs. In partnership with the class teacher, the student support teacher will design a six week ‘Individual Education Plan’ for your child, this may involve the student support teacher supporting your child either inside or outside of class. This plan will be reviewed every six weeks with the aim of supporting your child so that they no longer need additional support.
  • In some situations the Student Support teacher may feel that your child could benefit from an external assessment. The cost of this is usually passed onto the parents. If an external assessment identifies specific needs that need further support this will be provided by the Student Support teacher by redesigning your child’s ‘Individual Education Plan’.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The majority of children in our schools are bilingual or multilingual. In addition all children are learning English and Qur’anic Arabic during their school life. Shakhsiyah Schools’ celebrate al children’s languages and encourage children to speak all the languages they know. Class teachers will support children throughout their lessons

Other Support

The student Support teacher will also work through a programme of support with all children who need additional support to access the full curriculum until they are able to do so independently
